Being a leader in Global Missions (GM) brings me great joy and can be heart breaking. When I see the condition that a person is living it touches me deeply; and when a frown becomes a smile it touches me as well. We African American missionaries have a great task ahead of us: we must be prepared to share and spread the love of Jesus Christ , be willing to get dirty and come out of our comfort zone and most of all to remain humble through it all. Serving in the field of missions one may never know what to expect. I realize that every mission trip will not be the same, but I must do what I have been commissioned to do.

“While we were in Reynosa, MX the Josiah and Bethany Children’s Home (orphanage) that we went to were in need of financial assistance. The disconnect deadline to make the electricity payment was the 10th of December or they’re electricity was going to be disconnected. Marlan Hall was talking with the directors of the orphanage and asked them what their immediate need was. They told him that they had been praying that they would receive financial support for their electricity. Marlon located me sitting by a tree alone; I was just observing the children and all the activities that were going on. He introduced us and mentioned their need; I was just thinking to myself, what is it that we can do? When I heard what the request was I told them it was done. At this orphanage they have two buildings, one is the living quarters and the other is where their office is located. With the two buildings they had two different light bills. In total they needed a payment of sixteen hundred dollars. I am glad to say that we helped to meet the immediate need of the orphanage and they did not have to be in the dark.”

Participating with Missions has allowed me to see people through the eyes of Christ. I truly believe that when compassion meets needs miracles happen. Christ went about doing good and working Missions and when you do the same you are being his representative. I strongly recommend that everyone participate in missions at one level or another.

I was able to go to Kenya. I helped to feed and pray for the community. I shared American Sign Language (ASL) with the kids at the orphanage. I helped to build a home and assisted the medical staff at the clinic. I felt the hand of God the entire time I was there but most especially at the blessing of the new home celebration. My experience there increased my faith in knowing that God covers and provides for all – near and far.

My goal was to serve in meeting the needs of the orphanage in Kenya and the surrounding community. We were able to reach 300-350 people in the local community via clothing and school supply distribution, new home construction and a two day medical clinic. I wish we had more time. I wouldn’t change a thing.

As a 14 year old, my goal for this mission trip was to grow closer to God and get out of my comfort zone. I was pushed out of my comfort zone greatly, I can now pray without being fearful. I have grown closer to God and realized how truly blessed I am. When we built the house for the lady everyone in the community came to support her and her children and they loved on each other. The joy of the children has the greatest impact upon me. They have so little but they are so happy for what they DO have.

First I wanted to be able to help the people in Kenya but I also wanted to get a sense of the Kenyan culture and see if I could make a life out of mission work. I made relationships with the kids there; I still am using Swahili with my dad. I am able to share my experiences with people I know, which in turn makes them want to experience what I have. I focused mainly on the kids at the compound and I feel like I was able to make them feel like important individuals by the one on one time I spent with them. I could see how hard things were for people in the community but more noticeable was the love they share as a community. The community joined us for the blessing of the house we built. I overwhelmingly felt Christ. Everyone was excited to see the finished product and happy for the family. They were all grateful to God. The ladies we built the house for made us tea in spite of not having money. That humble gift meant the world.

My purpose was to provide an international mission experience for my teenage daughter who accompanied me and to serve and accept the calling to help others in the name of Jesus Christ. I experienced Christ in the eyes, hearts and hands of our mission team and the community.

Even though I went to be a blessing to the people of Dundori; I was tremendously blessed at how loving, humble, appreciative and happy over the little things they had. I experienced Christ everyday just looking at the faces of the people of Dundori.
